'The Ballad Of Shirley Collins' Screenprint by Luke Drozd
Poster/Print
'The Ballad of Shirley Collins' screenprint by UK artist Luke Drozd, produced in tandem with the forthcoming film of the same title. (All sales of the print will go towards the production of the film.) Beautifully executed, as you'd expect... the postmark features the year Shirley made her seminal journey to the US with Alan Lomax. Size A2. Limited to 100 copies.
From the man himself: "I love Shirley Collins and being asked to be a small part of helping with funding the documentary 'The Ballad of Shirley Collins' through creating a print is a real honour. In terms of the design itself, I wanted to acknowledge Shirley's travels and internationality and so a stamp seemed fitting. Always feels like a truly co-operative thing, post, getting all those countries to send and receive. I decided that image wise a songbird from both England and the US would work as a unifying image that talks about Shirley's time in both countries whilst also themselves being transitory. I settled on the Song Thrush for the UK (as it is mentioned in a song on 'Folk Roots, New Routes' and is also what my surname translates as in Polish) and then a Mockingbird for the US as it's the state bird of Mississippi where Shirley and Alan Lomax spent much of their time. I also like that the Mockingbird replicates other birds songs and saw parallels with Lomax and Collins collecting these folk tracks and the learning and re-singing of them by other singers through the years. The flower/plant is the cotton plant as this is the state flower of Mississippi but also felt synonymous with the Blues and the persecuted black workers from whence this music rose."

The sweetness of the harmony and beauty of the tracks made me have to purchase this album. The vocals float like ethereal sprites with compelling warmness yet a certain captivating sadness as well. This is what Americana should sound like... this is what country should sound like... for it's so real and emotionally delivered... yet absolutely gorgeous. theexplodingogre
